Pennsylvania State Police in Lancaster were called to the crash on Old Philadelphia Pike just east of Martin Road, at 9:53 p.m. on July 11, 2023.
A 2020 Ford Explorer driven by 41-year-old Bryce Taylor had been going west on Old Philadelphia Pike at the same time as the horse-and-buggy, according to the police investigation.
Taylor was "distracted looking down at the GPS on his phone and when his view shifted back to the roadway, he saw the horse and buggy directly in front of him," police said.
He attempted to brake but there was not enough "time to avoid rear-ending the buggy," the police explained.
The buggy overturned, ejecting all four occupants onto the road, all of whom were taken by Emergency Medical Services to Lancaster General Hospital, according to PSP.
Two patients were released with "minor scrapes and lacerations," but the other two remain at LGH with "possible broken bones and head injuries," as stated in the release.
The Lancaster Patrol Unit was assisted on the scene by Gordonville Fire and EMS Company, White Horse Fire and EMS, and Christiana Community Ambulance.
